Travelin’ Mick is a photographer and journalist, who has been relentlessly roaming the world in search of the last remaining tattoo cultures of this planet to record and thus conserve them for posterity.

It is his distinctive goal to promote the understanding of the importance of tattooing to the history and culture of mankind and as a veritable form of art.

Tattoos have been an integral part of the shaping of identities of societies and individuals throughout our history over thousands of years as well as a possibility to express our individuality and creativity.

Thorough research is meant to find out more about the relation of mankind and its societies with body art.

By visiting and documenting the last remaining traditional tattooing practices on all continents, he tries to preserve those cultures and show them to the world in images that express the beauty and pride of ethnic groups and traditional communities, who still bear the marks of their people.

After Motto and Florence Loewy, and in parallel to the exhibition programme, Forde invites Edition Patrick Frey (Zurich) to conceive a temporary bookshop. Artists books, first publications (Fuzi, Ma ligne, HuberHuber, Universen), rare books (J.F. Schnyder, Zuger- Baarerstrasse; Annelise Coste, Non; Karen Kilimnik, Paintings) or out of print (Walter Pfeiffer, Das Auge, die Gedanken, unentwegt wandernd; Fischli & Weiss, Airports; Piotr Uklanski, The Nazis), and best-sellers (Lurker Grand, Hot Love; Onorato/Krebs, The Great Unreal; Christian Schwager, Falsche Chalets), about fifty books are available at Forde from February 9th.
During the opening, Mirjam Fischer and Andreas Koller will present the work of Edition Patrick Frey.

About two weeks ago we tried to contact him for an interview. After emailing him a couple of times we finally got this response:

Today it broke that his name is Joshua Leary and he is 22 years old. Apparently he will make his first live appearance at the Tri Angle showcase soon…

With the likes of Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Raymond Pettibon images being tattooed by other tattooers  this project brought up many interesting questions about ownership and prices of the tattoos made.

Other than bringing up these intriguing questions the film has been made in the most detailed and achingly stylistic way. The film also gives a voice to the tattooed and their own personal experiences rather than the hugely famous artists who created the images.
