  2. IS TROPICAL

    by Ben Perdue

When I heard that London lo-fi dance band IS TROPICAL had matching Cheryl Cole leg tattoos I immediately thought of rose and barbed wire garters. The reality is more understated, but far easier to create with stick-and-poke. Rumoured to be signing with Kitsuné, and doing the festival circuit this summer. Playing KOKO on August 14 too if you’re up for a grimy night out in Camden Town.

Reading what Max was saying about the DVN show reminded me I had this old Nick Knight book gathering dust on the shelf. It’s a classic bit of inspiration and a regular reference point for men’s designers but beautiful all the same. Dries does it justice.

  4. I ACCUSE by Jean Toche

Jean Toche, I Accuse, March 26 – April 9, 1968, Gallerie Le Zodiaque, Brussels, 20 pages, offset, staple bound.

A rare catalog from an early solo exhibition by Jean Toche of Guerrilla Art Action Group (GAAG). This booklet documents Toche’s little-known aggressive light environments. The catalog, which is also a kind of artists’ book, features text in English and French.

  5. New Wave touchstones: manic dervish disco cadenza

    July 6, 2010
    by Jeanne-Salome Rochat

De l’or dans les hauteurs is a poem by Herman Melville that inspired Claire Denis in the direction of her rarely upsetting film Beau Travail (1999).

    De l’or dans les hauteurs
Et de l’or dans le val,
    La convoitise au cœur,
    Pour le ciel nulle part
    Pour l’homme nul bonheur.

    that could be translated as

    Gold in the mountain
    And gold in the glen,
    Greed in the heart,
    Heaven having no part
    And unsatisfied men.

The whole film unfolds like a continuous dance, and there’s as much choreography in the movements between shots as there is in the movements of the actors or the placement of the landscapes.

Below, the end scene, one of the most alive and electric moments in the film, where Denis Lavant performs a contained intensity cuts loose in a solitary disco dance to Corona’s Rhythm of the Night.
