  2. Miroslav Tichý

    WIKIPEDIA SAYS:

“Miroslav Tichý (born November 20, 1926) is a photographer who from the 1960s to 1985 took thousands of surreptitious pictures of women in his hometown of Kyjov in the Czech Republic, using homemade cameras constructed of cardboard tubes, tin cans and other at-hand materials. Most of his subjects were unaware they are being photographed. A few struck beauty-pageant poses when they sighted him, perhaps not realizing that the parody of a camera he carried was real.[1][2]

His soft focus, fleeting glimpses of the women of Kyjov are skewed, spotted and badly printed — flawed by the limitations of his primitive equipment and a series of deliberate processing mistakes meant to add poetic imperfections.[3]

Of his technical methods, he has said, “First of all, you have to have a bad camera”, and, “If you want to be famous, you must do something more badly than anybody in the entire world.”[4][5]

During the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia, Tichý was considered a dissident and badly treated. His photographs remained largely unknown until an exhibition was held for him in 2004. Tichý does not attend exhibitions, and continues to live a life of self-sufficiency and freedom from the standards of society.[4]“

  4. Dressing for Pleasure

    October 3, 2010
    by Ben Perdue

Launched last week on a wet and windy night at the AMUTi 23 bookshop just off Charing Cross Rd, Dressing for Pleasure documents the 70s rubber scene in pictures via a best-of selection from AtomAge magazine. Featuring the amazing fetishwear of John Sutcliffe, it uncovers a secret world hidden behind the front doors of suburbia, where bespoke craftsmanship was an important part of kink. Check the interiors too.

  5. The Illustrated Man, Ray Bradbury

    by Ben Perdue

Getting into my sci-fi again lately and beginning to realise there are a lot of classics I haven’t read yet, like The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury for starters (it’s in the post). Basic gist is that there are 18 short stories in the book, all tied together by the fact they exist in the form of tattoos on one man. The still above is taken from the 1969 film of the book. If you like your retro-futurism, check out the trailer.

  6. Imperial Bedrooms

I haven’t read the new Brett Easton Ellis book Imperial Bedrooms yet so this isn’t a review, but he’s been in London doing press for it this week. Inspired me to pick up the latest Interview magazine and read the Christopher Bollen feature about him. The main thing that stuck out for me was this quote:

“I really think New York is over, man. L.A. is the future. It’s much more cutting edge than New York, I’m sorry. Yeah, it has an immense doucheness to it. It does. But also, the cool parts are so much cooler than New York right now. I think New York’s really old-school. I can’t explain it. That’s just where I’m at. And also, I don’t believe that whole idea that if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere. If you survive L.A. and get over that initial hurdle, then you can make it anywhere.”

I’ve never stayed in either for longer than a month but I think it’s a pretty penetrating view and I wonder how many people share it.

  7. EAT YOUR HEART OUT

One morning during last season’s London Fashion Week I woke up and stumbled down the stairs from my Hackney attic bedroom only to come face to face with Lily Jones hard at work on a multi purpose kitchen mixer straight out of Dr. Frankenstein’s laboratory. Over the days following I was treated to taste tests during various stages of an other worldly red devil recipe. Lily Vanilli’s cookbook/graphic novel “A Zombie Ate My Cupcake” has just been released and I can attest that her beauty has been matched by her baked goods. Like her crackcakes Lily is drop dead gorgeous inside and out and her, until now, secret creations are sure to satisfy the most ravenous cannibal cravings.

Recipes include lifelike Marzipan Beetles (originally designed for Alexander McQueen’s film project), Meringue Bones, with raspberry blood sauce. Black cherry Dracula’s Bitered velvet cupcakes, with bloody bite marks in the cream cheese frosting, a Honey, Almond and Sesame Fallen Angel Cake and a dark chocolate Devil’s Food cake with chocolate devil horns. From Crackney to Crooklawn, it’s all good in the hood.
